BLUETITS, TRAFFIC CONES AND RAILWAY SLEEPERS! IT'S ALL GO!
Traffic cone used as blue tit nest, between piles of railway sleepers. Railwaysleepers.comBees swarm on the side of new railway sleeper pile. Railwaysleepers.comLuna, the brave protector of the railway sleeper yard. Railwaysleepers.comIt's pretty hectic at the railway sleeper yard. Last week we had swarms of visiting honey bees wanting to set up a new colony on top of a pack of railway sleepers. This week we have a family of Bluetits nesting inside one of our traffic cone signs. Every few minutes the parents fly in and out feeding the chicks. Wonderful to see nature living side by side with our railway sleepers. Adding to that our ferocious (hmmm...) guard dog Luna, and we'll soon we'll be having family safari days!

MITTA MITTA'S AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY SLEEPER WALLS SLOTTED INTO STEEL H BEAMS

With a total population of 171, Mitta Mitta has more railway sleepers than people, and an excellent taste in railway sleeper landscaping. Where else would a railway sleeper addict want to live, not to mention drinking a craft beer from the Mitta Mitta Brewing Company whilst supporting the local football team, Mitta United.
COME ON YOU MITTA!!

PETER'S AMAZING TERRACED LANDSCAPING WITH USED HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS

To say that I am impressed with Peter's incredible project is an understatement! A wonderful collection of steps, walls, paths and raised beds all interlinking on different levels, using weathered reclaimed railway sleeper, and dug out painstakingly by hand  An amazing achievement, that is a tribute to both his hard work and your imagination. A stunning piece of landscaping and an incredible transformation of an overgrown railway bank.

The silver weathered railway sleepers look so striking amongst the lush greenery, creating raised tiers of hedges, shrubs and picturesque borders. The bleached oak railway sleepers provide inviting steps that link the different heights of this spectacular garden.

THRUSSINGTON MILL'S RAISED BEDS AND WOODEN TRACK USING ANCIENT WEATHERED RAILWAY SLEEPERS

A perfect example of old hardwood railway sleepers that have weathered and bleached to a silver grey, and are stunningly full of rustic character. They form ancient looking raised beds that border the wooden track that appears from a bygone age. Simply wonderful.

Engineer Thomas wins two awards for railway sleeper sustainability

University of Southern Queensland graduate Thomas Murphy has won two national awards for his honours thesis on railway sleeper design.

“When I started looking into what I could do my Honours thesis project on, I saw it as an opportunity to explore something I had a keen interest in – and railway engineering was related to my program,” said Murphy, whose project focussed on the sustainability of Australia’s railway sleepers.

“I conducted a detailed review and analysis of current rail track structures before investigating how emerging sleeper technologies could impact track behaviour in Australia and the best way to employ them,” he added . “I looked at the effectiveness of interspersing railway sleepers of different materials together, that is a timber railway sleeper next to a concrete sleeper, or one concrete sleeper for every two to four timber railway sleepers. “Based on my results I was able to make a recommendation for the interspersing ratio, which in turn can ultimately help to improve the sustainability and durability of our railways.”

ADRIAN'S STAGGERED MINI 'CASTLE WALL' WITH NEW PINE RAILWAY SLEEPERS

ADRIAN'S STAGGERED MINI 'CASTLE WALL' WITH NEW PINE RAILWAY SLEEPERS

There's something very original and eye-catching about creating a garden raised bed that has crenellated heights, like a tiny fortified castle wall. Even more satisfying when it imaginatively curves around the garden. A very attractive and imaginative retaining wall, helped by using shorter length railway sleepers that are already cut to size. Perfectly built and looking beautiful now it's fully planted.
